Youth Empowerment Programme
The programme takes place in four districts in Zimbabwe; Bulilima, Mangew, Wedza, Chimanimani and in Plumtreee town.
All our volunteers are national or community based and each programme lasts eight months.
DIRECT DELIVERY
- In and out-of-school clubs in which volunteers and youths take part in income supplementing activities, for example making money out of drama productions.
- Volunteers provide training in confidence building and self-esteem.
- Planned sessions in which volunteers facilitate lessons in sexual and reproductive health, livelihoods and life skills.
- Volunteers supporting teachers in delivering lessons on sexual and reproductive health, gender awareness and HIV/AIDS.
- Dance4life and AIDS Action Clubs come together to raise awareness, take action and disseminate information to other young people.
WORKING THROUGH PARTNERS
- We work closely with the Minister of Education and the Minister of Health in order to advise them on policies affecting young people.
- Restless Development (Zimbabwe) is implementing the Girl Empowerment Movement, running ‘Gender Clubs’ in order to promote gender equality.
- We work in health clinics which lack skilled staff in order to provide youth-friendly services.
- We are part of the committee of the National Orphaned/Vulnerable Children organisation, which alongside other organisations we offer our expertise in working with young people.
PUSHING FOR CHANGE
- During 2009-2010 volunteers worked in communities to lobby and campaign against the selling of illegal alcohol in shops.
- On a national level the dance4life team campaigns to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe.
- During the World Cup campaigns took place with partnered organisations to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.
A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS
- Ex-volunteers who are now students continue to work in their universities to engage others in awareness of issues which affect young people in Zimbabwe.
