Youth Empowerment Programme

The programme takes place in four districts in Zimbabwe; Bulilima, Mangew, Wedza, Chimanimani and in Plumtreee town.

All our volunteers are national or community based and each programme lasts eight months.

DIRECT DELIVERY

  • In and out-of-school clubs in which volunteers and youths take part in income supplementing activities, for example making money out of drama productions.
  • Volunteers provide training in confidence building and self-esteem.
  • Planned sessions in which volunteers facilitate lessons in sexual and reproductive health, livelihoods and life skills.
  • Volunteers supporting teachers in delivering lessons on sexual and reproductive health, gender awareness and HIV/AIDS.
  • Dance4life and AIDS Action Clubs come together to raise awareness, take action and disseminate information to other young people.

WORKING THROUGH PARTNERS

  • We work closely with the Minister of Education and the Minister of Health in order to advise them on policies affecting young people.
  • Restless Development (Zimbabwe) is implementing the Girl Empowerment Movement, running ‘Gender Clubs’ in order to promote gender equality.
  • We work in health clinics which lack skilled staff in order to provide youth-friendly services.
  • We are part of the committee of the National Orphaned/Vulnerable Children organisation, which alongside other organisations we offer our expertise in working with young people.

 PUSHING FOR CHANGE

  • During 2009-2010 volunteers worked in communities to lobby and campaign against the selling of illegal alcohol in shops.
  • On a national level the dance4life team campaigns to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe.
  • During the World Cup campaigns took place with partnered organisations to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.

A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS

  • Ex-volunteers who are now students continue to work in their universities to engage others in awareness of issues which affect young people in Zimbabwe.
