- 28% increase in the number of young people seeking out treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections
OUR SUCCESSES
In 2010, Restless Development (Sierra Leone) achieved the following successes:
Goal 1. Young people will take a lead role in the peaceful development of Sierra Leone
- 75 (45 male, 30 female) Young Leaders gained employment either through internships, or formal and informal employment opportunities
- 129 Young Leaders are currently studying in institutions of higher learning
- 177 workshops were organised for young people on peace building and conflict resolution in communities
- 3360 (2,039 male, 1,321 female) participated in the peace building and conflict resolution workshops
- 2,014 (1,098 male and 916 female) young people took the lead in organising events and workshops in communities
Goal 2. Young people will have improved livelihoods
- 173 livelihoods or entrepreneurship workshops were organised for young people
- 2,696 (1,578 male, 1118 female) participated in the livelihood or entrepreneurship workshops in communities
- 325 pre-professional skills (CV writing, interview techniques and computer skills) sessions were delivered for young people in institutions of higher learning
- 1,945 (1,189 male, 756 female) young people benefited for the pre-professional skills training in institutions of higher learning
- One national career/employment fair was organised attracting 250 young people, government officers, and 13 NGOs/ private sector organisations.
Goal 3. Young people will make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health
-Young People will have access to improved youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services
- 475 exposure visits on sexual and reproductive health issues were organised for young people in communities
- 15,946 (8,117 male, 7,829 female) benefited from the exposure visits to clinics and health talks on sexual and reproductive health issues in communities
- 1,219 peer advice sessions were organised for young people in communities
- 5,228 young people benefited from Voluntary Counselling and Testing services in rural and urban communities
- 2,626 awareness raising events (rallies, games and sports events, radio talk shows, ABC sessions (Abstinence, Being Faithful, Condoms) and video shows) were organised for young people in rural communities
- 17,817 (8,796 male, 9,025 female) participated in these awareness raising events
- 1,628 awareness raising events on sexual and reproductive health (drama, ABC sessions, radio talks) were organised for young people in urban communities
- 119,889 (59,202 male, 60,687 female) community members (elders and young people) participated in the urban awareness raising events in urban communities
- 201 awareness raising events focused on gender were conducted in rural communities
- 16,419 (7,758 male, 8661 female) young people participated in the events in rural communities
- 63 Ministry of Health staff trained in providing youth friendly services in rural communities
-Young people will have increased life skills to make and act on informed decision regarding their sexual health
- 11,410 sexual and reproductive health lessons were taught to young people in classes in rural communities
- 31,500 (12,600 male, 18,900 female) young people in school were reached with direct class room intervention on sexual and reproductive health
- An overall 66,150 (26,460 male, 39,690 female) young people in schools were reached on sexual and reproductive health /life skills issues through club activities and awareness raising campaigns in rural communities.
- 63 Youth Friendly Resource Centres and 3 Youth Information Centres provided support and peer advice to young people in rural and urban communities.
- 17,917 (9,496 male, 7,738 female) young people in and out-of-school accessed services at the Youth Friendly Resource Centres in rural communities
- 3,398 (2,056 male, 1,342 female) accessed services (reading, video shows and games) at Youth Information Centres in institutions of higher learning in urban communities
- 126 Youth Action Clubs for in and out-of-school youths were established or made functional in rural communities
- Membership for in school Youth Action Clubs totalled 1,246 young people (717 male, 529 female)
- Membership for out of school Youth Action Clubs totalled 445 young people (271 male, 174 female)
- 3 Student Action Groups were established or made functional in institutions of higher learning
- Membership for the Student Action Groups is 60 students (40 males, 20 females)
-Government and communities will implement measures to support young people to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health
- 167 teachers training workshops were organised on the implementation of the sexual and reproductive health curriculum in schools in rural communities
- 371 (329 male, 42 female) Ministry of Education teachers participated in the training
- 650 community sensitisation events and trainings were organised with adults on sexual and reproductive health issues of young people.
- 250 (159 male, 46 female) community adults participated in the trainings on sexual and reproductive health issues for young people.
