Community and Youth Empowerment Programme
Restless Development (Nepal) operates in schools in the Doti district and supports Green Clubs in Dhading, Rupandehi and Nawalparasi districts.
STRUCTURE
The Community and Youth Empowerment Programme operates on a three year cycle:
Year One: a demonstration year (80% volunteer input and 20% the local community)
Year Two: an active involvement year (50% volunteer input and 50% the local community)
Year Three: a sustainability year (20% volunteer input and 80% the local community)
19 Volunteer Peer Educators (Community, National and International) make up each programme and reach 5000 people.
DIRECT DELIVERY
- Students attend health clinics and are encouraged to pass on their knowledge gained during visits.
- Stalls are set up at community events to share sexual and reproductive health literature and distribute condoms to young people.
- Life skills training workshops are conducted alongside practical life education.
- Professional help is offered in the form of CV writing, interview preparation, job hunting and career planning.
- Training workshops on gender and development, leadership development and team building are delivered within the local community for people outside of the formal school system.
- Young people are involved at all levels and are encouraged to take leadership roles in the community all the way up to a national level.
- Health visits and workshops are held for older members of the community to encourage the community to send their youth to school.
WORKING THROUGH PARTNERS
- At the national level, we work with different Ministries, Youth Alliances, and donors.
- At the local level we work with five partner NGOs who assist us in implementing our programmes.
- We build the capacity of our partners through sharing skills, methodologies, programmes planning, development and implementation
PUSHING FOR CHANGE
- Working with members of the local community, of all ages to promote young people in decision-making roles.
- Making a community-based diagnosis of what needs to be addressed in each community- using stakeholders.
SHARING AND LEARNING
- As a leader in the National Youth Working Group, we work closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sports around the National Youth Policy, the International Year of Youth, and Youth Responsive Budgeting.
- We developed the Youth Participation Guide for Policy-Makers in collaboration with The UK Department for International Development, and have begun training stakeholders in its implementation.
A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS
- Volunteers from the community have established youth-led clubs called Green Clubs in schools. In 1991 they became self-sustainable and there are now more than 100 that are active and effective.
- Inside communities Youth Leadership Clubs have been established and we are equipping them with the skills and knowledge to sustain activities in the long-term
OUR VIEW FOR THE FUTURE
Restless Development (Nepal) aims to work closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sport, the Association of International NGOs in Nepal and different partners to spearhead the youth led development initiatives in Nepal. Our main focus will be in health, education, livelihoods and life skills.
In 2010, Restless Development (Nepal) successfully piloted the Dance4Life programme in Kathmandu. Within two months of its operation, the programme reached over 700 young people and was able to mobilise 30 Peer Educators and Trainers. We aim to expand this innovative programme in different rural districts in Nepal.
