This is how we make things happen quickly and effectively, and is the source of our expertise and credibility. It will make up at least 50% of our efforts.
But young people can help fill these gaps. We professionally train and support young adults to help spread knowledge, develop skills and address priority issues within their communities and countries.
We make lasting improvements in the lives of some of the most excluded and marginalised people in the world. We also help communities figure out how to sustain youth-led initiatives over the long-term so that they are not dependent on Restless Development.
Despite decades of armed conflict, famine and extreme poverty, rural youth in the Ugandan district of Karamoja have proven their ability to lead peaceful development in their communities in collaboration with Restless Development.
Through an initial pilot programme, 14 young Karimojong Volunteer Peer Educators were professionally trained and supported to lead the recovery from conflict and community development processes. Reaching 3,365 young people, they led activities to engage their peers in conflict resolution and sexual reproductive health awareness, while establishing youth income-generating projects.
The results were hugely encouraging. We recorded:
Across Zimbabwe, Restless Development held 150 awareness-raising events including 20 youth-parent forums, engaging 325 parents and 725 young people in discussion about sexual and reproductive health (SRH).
We also held 28 capacity building workshops for teachers, ensuring that schools in Zimbabwe are able to adequately deliver SRH education in line with Ministry of Education standards. As a result we have impacted over 3500 SRH sessions in schools.
In addition, Restless Development distributed 66,498 condoms across 4 rural districts where clinics and shops were under-stocked.
